The z/VSE web site offers more than 20 tools (provided unsupported, 'as is', at no additional charge) for download. These tools are designed make certain z/VSE tasks easier and more interesting. Because of the sheer number of tools, you may have lost track about what tools are provided and what they are for. There may be a tool available that you are not aware of, for a task you need to perform. This session will provide an overview of each the tools currently available on the z/VSE homepage. For every tool, a short description and usage scenarios will be discussed.

U1 Use KEY15 Instead Of KEY0 And Win

This is a session by an installation that uses bare bone VSE and some subsystems. We had tables in memory that needed to be shared across partitions. We put them in system getvis (KEY0 protected memory) and encountered performance problems. I changed a shared (system getvis) in-memory database from using storage KEY 0 to storage KEY F. This significantly reduced overhead of going into and out of KEY 0, not to mention the single threaded nature of being in KEY 0. This was done in assembler language, so the attendees would need a working knowledge of assembler. I will be happy to share how we did this, and even share the assembler code.

Each zone separated from others by firewalls and by access policies to ensure that there is no unwanted user access or flow of data. V2 Migrate and leave data behind on the mainframe!

Alchemy Solutions is proud to participate in WAVV 2010.  As a migration and modernization company, we often encounter companies who want to move at least part of their applications off of the mainframe in order to prevent an increase in MIPS.  This option gives them the chance to selectively move some part of their application inventory off to a less expensive platform, yet still keep their valuable business logic in place.  But what about data that needs to be accessed by applications that are going to be migrated and by applications that are not going to be migrated?  Up until now, that has been a huge dilemma for companies that are looking to reduce MIPS.

As an answer to this very challenging issue, Alchemy Solutions is proud to introduce and demonstrate NeoData zLink.  zLink gives companies the ability to migrate some portion of their applications off the mainframe and still be able to access the VSAM data that remains on the mainframe.  This way, the migrated applications can share data with applications that are not yet ready to be migrated, or that may never be candidates for migration. Migrated applications can selectively access VSAM data that has been moved to SQL Server (without changing your application code at all!) and VSAM data that is still stored on your mainframe.

IBM supplies the DFH0STAT utility which provides CICS session statistics similar to the old CICS/VSE 2.3 shutdown statistics.  In this session, Gene Hudders will discuss and analyze actual production DFH0STAT reports provided by a number of z/VSE sites (actual WAVV member installations).  He will review the “Good, Bad and the Ugly”, will touch on all the available reports for DFH0STAT, and will cover everything from MXT, DSA Allocations, Program and Temporary Storage statistics, LSRPOOLS, to CICS Dataspaces.  He will point out problem areas, potential bottlenecks, and then will offer some performance recommendations.  Bring your DFH0STAT reports with and compare them to the samples in this session.  How can you afford to turn down a tuneup like this (especially at someone else’s expense)?

Lab: Linux on System z Installation Hands-on Lab Part 1 of 3

Linux for System z has generated a lot of excitement among System z customers. However, for many

this is a new and strange environment. This workshop will provide an opportunity to install and

configure Linux for System z in a z/VM virtual machine. The hands on portion of this workshop will be

self paced, and result in a Linux for System z system running Apache, Samba, DNS (BIND), a firewall

and the KDE desktop. The installation portion of the workshop will use FCP attached SCSI LUNs

instead of ECKD DASD. Students will also gain experience adding FCP LUNs to the system following

installation, and will configure the additional LUNs into a multipath logical volume.

The goal is to equip each attendee with the skills required to return home and install Linux for

System z using the distributions from Novell/SUSE, Red Hat, or the binary objects available for

download from the Marist College web site.

NEW: The workshop was recently upgraded to the RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.4 level, and the

SuSE SLES 11 level. If you have not had an opportunity to work with these distributions or

versions, here is a chance to gain that experience.

V1 Tape Elimination and DR/Recovery of Mainframe and Open Systems Using Local/Remote Virtual Tape

By partnering with several well-known DR/Recovery services providers, SecureAgent provides an end-to-end, local and remote backup/recovery solution of z/VM and z/VSE systems (as well as other mainframe, open systems or AS/400 environments). The Secure Data Solution^® (SDS) is a patented and patent-pending virtual tape system and remote vault that allows an organization to efficiently store and retrieve compressed and encrypted virtual tape images both locally and at a remote location(s). The SDS appears as tape units to attached computer systems; however, in reality, the virtual tape images are compressed and encrypted files residing on disk arrays attached to the SDS. The SDS connects via either ESCON or FICON to mainframes and via FC/SCSI to non-mainframe systems. As virtual tape images are being written to a local SDS, they can also be transmitted to other Secure Data Solutions installed at remote sites for disaster recovery purposes or to be shared by applications on computer systems connected to the SDS at the remote sites. The SDS encrypts and compresses all data, so data security is maintained and the need for off-site tape handling and transport is reduced or eliminated -- and so is the liability due to loss or theft of unencrypted data on physical tape. If physical tapes are needed, the SDS can be configured to connect to certain attached physical tape devices at a local or a remote site.

The Secure Data Solution normally resides in a standard communications cabinet and requires few environmental resources. An organization can install a remote SDS at another office, a remote data center, a disaster recovery provider, or a vital records provider's facility. When the remote Secure Data Solution is connected to computer systems at the remote site, those systems can also access the virtual tape images. A single operator console can manage the entire Secure Data Solution environment (all sites).

Moving to a virtual tape environment can be extremely easy and very cost-effective, especially when considering the DR/Recovery aspects of such a solution. Join us to hear how the SDS has benefitted our DR/Recovery partners and fellow VSE users in their current support backups for their mainframe environment.
